Have been coming to Chris and Pitts since I was a child. So glad this location is still open as the Whittier location was closed down. I have tried all their food but my favorite is their beef ribs and I usually get them well done with the sauce on the side as the well done gets the fat nice and crispy and tasty. I always get their salad with their French dressing which is my favorite and their BBQ beans. As for their chicken their broasted chicken with their broasted potatoes are the bomb. Give them a try if you are in Downey

If you're looking for a good steak, ribs, and soups, this is the place. Everything we've had has been so yummy. Pull pork sandwich is also really good. They've got the best onion rings I've ever tasted, for sure. If you're into onion rings, make sure you have them here. All 3 sounds I highly recommend. Beef Barley is my favorite, and chili bean soup is my kids. Their cheeseburgers are also great. The service is always good

Cockroach infestation

What bothered me mostly of this place was the level of disregard for patrons

I came with my family and had no greeting just a request for number in party walked to our table menus tossed on the table and host walked away to another table

No niceties no we hope you enjoy your meal or here take seat (obviously asking for drink order would’ve been unreal at this point since not even a hello was offered)

Made eye contact with two different servers none of them seemed glad to be there

While our host was hanging on or doing some awkward pole routine on one of the poles near the napkin stand
We were then greeted by our server (4-5 min later from being seated) for our drinks request

Our choices were given to the server and I also asked why did they have the letter B …
Anyone else curious? Boy oh Boy

The misleading response given to me was they had out of date appliances this seemed like an unlikely reason to get a letter B and since it’s been over a year that the health department came they couldn’t get an updated rating

We left … thankfully la county health department uploads the full report for 5 years

Below is the 11+ major violations including rodent and roach infestation and observations of some pretty bold roaches observed in broad daylight by the inspector

Note: I did call back and asked to speak to the manager (Mayra) and asked the manager why the letter B rating she also gave the false story of out of date appliances
I asked her about the real reason and the detail report online
She denied any and all knowledge of such report that only corporate has read the whole report; however , LA county public health has signed off acknowledgment from Mayra the manager and her knowledge and personal discussion of said violations.

They have had 2 reinspections since and still a letter B . I would say it’s safe to say this establishment needs to get it together and not mislead the good people of LA

Join me as we travel back in time to the tender year of 1987 where the servers are all angry to be there, angry to serve you, and your food will undoubtedly look as if it just came out of a hospital cafeteria.
Now the Ribs…the ribs were absolutely amazing. There is absolutely no doubt about it and yet they were served to us as if to say…”take these and shut up you peasants”
Granted the server never SAID any of these things but you could tell it was implied which to be honest added to the charm of this 80s dining experience. All that was missing was bright pink uniforms and indoor smoking! If you are looking to eat some rootn tootn BBQ at a mediocre place where 90% of the room drove a Ford F150 and a certain point in their life….you’ve found your place.

I don't usually do reviews but this food was the worst I've had in a long time. Did early take out for dinner 1st mistake I'm sure it was lunch leftovers warmed up. Potato was small and old you could tell rewarded by color the ribs didn't even have BBQ sauce it was thickly covered with what tasted like tomatoes paste. I'll never go back.

I ordered a roast beef sandwich and it was almost all slices of fat! The quality has gone down!! My husband's steak was of poor quality also and that's a shame because I've been going there was years and years!!!! Our server was so sweet and she was a great server!!!!

So sad and disappointed with the cleanliness of the restaurant when visiting during a return trip to CA recently. Chris n Pitts has always been a favorite spot of mine but unfortunately I will not be returning when visiting CA moving forward. The restroom smelled horrible and there was poop on the toilet. The restaurant had just opened 30 minutes earlier. I was told to sit anywhere but every table was dirty. I asked a waitress to please clean a table and she did but I’m unsure why the restaurant was not clean upon closing the night before or prior to opening for the day. Our waitress was very nice and kind which was appreciated. My salad bowl was not clean and had what I hope was bbq sauce on it. One of my mom’s fork had food stuck to it which should have been caught when being wrapped in the napkin. The restaurant was rated with a B which between that and the dirty, smelly restroom should have been enough for me to leave but I always try to give the benefit of the doubt. I won’t be visiting again.

I love Chris and Pitts. I've been coming here for more than 50 years. This is an institution in So Cal culture.

The food continues a decline in quality, and the prices aren't cheap for what you get. I ordered a burger for lunch and asked for grilled onions on my burger. They brought me enough grilled onions to be served family style to a party of 4, like a side dish. I'm unsure what the logistics is behind a $6 side dish of onions, but it appears to be an interesting way to pack your bill with unneeded expense...

No bbq sauce to be found, and we saw our server only a couple of times during our meal with drinks empty, etc...

I wish the few remaining locations could be saved and turned around with proper management before they shutter and are gone forever...

This is a small dated restaurant located just off the highway. I was the first customer of the day, and I was greeted with a dated old restaurant smell. Old restaurants are either very good or very bad. Unfortunately, my experience wasn’t very pleasant. I ordered a full rack of ribs, the salad with vinaigrette and mashed potatoes. The ribs were pretty stiff, I can bet my mortgage that they were not made in the last 48 hours. The sauce was just.. bad. The mash potatoes were ok, but also tasted like they were made yesterday. I found a small hair at the bottom of the potatoes dish. Photo attached. I didn’t make a big deal, just left about half the rack and paid $60 and went on my way. I think a small diner would assume I wanted something free, so I kept it to myself and just left. I’m from Texas- and I thought Texas BBQ pride is something they made up… but in Texas the ribs fall off the bone and the sauce is strong. Maybe good Texas food is why us Texans are all overweight and people here are thin, because they are subjected to mediocre food. Norma was my waitress, she appeared to be running the floor and running around. She was good with me and other customers, but sounded very short and rude to her colleagues. The restaurant is very busy, but in my opinion, the restaurant is living off the good ole days, and older children returning with their parents trying to relive memories before they pass.

Barbecue Beef Rib dinner, Hawaiian Style..... omg, so tender and savory with a sweet taste from the pineapple slices and BBQ sauce they are cooked with, it just compliments the taste of the BBQ beef ribs ooh so perfectly. I highly recommend this dinner. 10+ in my opinion.

There are very few good places for good BBQ in SoCal, this is one.
2024 February update: still one of 3 good BBQ places in SoCal. My favorite is the BBQ Brisket Sandwich with beans and fries. When I was younger I liked the ribs best but now I use a fork and knife to eat the sandwich.

One of my all time favorite restaurants, have been coming here since I was a little kid, and I was very excited about coming back. I had not been here since Covid, it has really gone downhill. The lunch portions were not just small, they were tiny. 1/4 chicken and baby back ribs were actually 1 tiny pork rib. They charged for sauce and ketchup. The chicken and rib (not ribs) were very dry. Very sad. 2 stars for nostalgia’s sake.

All the food was pretty average. with exception of the onion rings which were excellent. My steak fries were pretty bland and just a smidge above room temperature. Probably sitting in the kitchen waiting to get delivered. Management needs to hire more waitresses. Our waitress was running around as fast as she could to every table and was having to buss most of her own tables. Our food was delivered in reasonable time But I had to sit there for almost 30 minutes waiting for my check. Not the waitresses fault that the place is understaffed.

I am originally from Downey and grew up coming here as far back as the 1990’s. Some things are still the same, but a lot has changed. Something felt “off” about the place. The service doesn’t seem to be what it used to be. Most of the food was still great, but the steak I got was dry and stuck to the plate. I don’t ever remember the food tasting dry at Chris & Pitts. I didn’t ask the waitress if she could swap it out because she seemed like she was having a bad day, and not that interested or invested in serving us. Over all, I’d give the evening a B- or C+.

First and foremost I want to say that the employees I interacted with were all great. The food was excellent. I ordered the sirloin steak, half BBQ chicken, baked potato, and cole claw. The whole plate was delicious. The garlic bread that came with the meals was great as well. The restaurant was decorated festively with Christmas lights and other decorations. The only down side would be the shoddiness of the booth I sat at. There was a patch where they repaired the synthetic leather, I could feel the wood when I sat down, and it was very uncomfortable. It could have just been that bench, but the other booths at the front of the restaurant didn't look much better. Besides that everything else was great. There is plenty of parking in the lot, so no need to worry about parking.

The white girl took a long time just to take my order and then when she decided to be ready instead of saying how can I help you she asked me do you know what you wanna order and she said it like I was bothering her! The barbecue was nasty had hardly and sauce on the chicken ! Chris was the Pitts !

This was my go to place for BBQ. At work we ordered and drove 20 miles to pick up. Went there for father's day and we were the first group there. We ordered and the tables around us got served before us. The table behind us had about he same amount of people in their party and we had to wait 15 mins longer to get our food. Once the food got there not everyone was served all their food, my nephew only got his steak none of his sides we kept asking for the sides, waiter couldn't keep up. I got my coleslaw at the end of my meal. We kept asking for condiments and we had someone get up and walk to the staff area to get someone's attention. The food was over cooked and didn't have the same flavors I enjoyed before. Waiting so long for the food and the constant need to get the waiters attention was a complete let down especially for fathers day. Wouldn't recommend eating there just not the same and service is awful.

I have not been to Chris &Pitts since before covid.
Had the hamburger.
Did not care for it as it was not cooked and bland. The French fries were good.
The service was a little slow and the place was empty.
The place had a very interesting happening as a customer not only skipped out on his bill, but he was trying to take the knife off the wall. Not very safe establishment to enjoy a lunch at.
I will not feel good about recommending this Chris & Pitts located in Downey, CA.

C&P has been a much loved family favorite of BBQ. We've been eating at C&P for about 60 years and travel from Indio, CA to Downey to get it, so it's a really big disappointment when so much is investment in travel time and gas expense, only to get bad food that you can't eat. You could NOT cut the steaks and what little you could get off of them, had to be spit out in a napkin because you couldn't chew it. The baby back ribs tasted like old/reheated pork. The spaghetti was total mush. The hamburger was so dry/overcooked. They took the steaks back (but charged for ala carte salads), but we paid for the rest and took it home for the dogs. The quality of their food is a hit and miss and this visit, was a real miss, that with a tip, still cost $130.
