This place is everything people say it is. Good grub, friendly space PLENTY OF FOOD. It very well may be one of those, last good portion, good priced places left in Cali. The fries are my favorite and very shareable but dang it, I want them all. Hahaha Oh, hey have you ever watched that old movie called Blues Brothers? Remember the scene where he orders 3 ORANGE WHIPS? 🍹 They have them here. 😃 Not a cocktail it's in the soda fountain. Seriously Soooooo yummy!!!! Second time here -- terribly disappointed. (I had to take two stars away from the previous rating.) Our order consisted of one Tops Pastrami sandwich, two Tops Special Burger (cheeseburger with Pastrami), a large order of fries, a small order of onion rings, and two drinks. The onion rings were extremely overcooked & the fries were not even close to warm! The sandwiches seemed a bit skimpy for the price paid & weren't as good as those we had the first time we were here. Two of the three of us prefer to dip the fries & onion rings in ranch dressing/dip; that would be an extra charge, no thanks... this lunch order was already over $54!

Havent been to the Pasadena/SGV area last trip and had a free day so decided to finally try the Original Tops which has been bookmarked on my go to list for a while.

Conveniently located off the 210 Freeway, went at lunchtime so the street leading to the drive thru had a line so decided to drive past that and found parking in the neighborhood. Anywhere you see a line, it must be good. This rule applies here🤙

Had to get an orange bang to start it off, along with the Tops Special Burger (with a massive heaping of Pastrami) and a SMALL chili cheese fries since you just gotta full send. The chili cheese fries even though it says small is enough for two people. Yep its quite massive for its size.

Eyes are bigger than my stomach. Ended up taking half of the burger and fries home. Worth the hour drive each way today....5 stars🤙🤙

While visiting Pasadena, looking for a quality place to try out, my friend who ate there before highly recommended me to try it out. Taking a chance, I went and got recommended to tried out their Chili Cheese Fries, size: Small.

I was very impressed by the mouth watering aroma when the order was served, my first bite blew my mind away!! I love how the cheese blends very nicely with the spice-passionate chili on top of very finely made crispy fries, very tasty and fantastic! As a hobbyist food critic passionate about trying out the finest dishes at many restaurants and cafes, I’ve gain meaningful insight to make critiques on service quality, taste, presentation, and customer service. From the lovely treatment from staff to the best tasting chili cheese fries ever eaten, compared to 7 other fast food places, give this place a solid recommendation!!

The chefs and service staff are very well trained, collaborative, and approachable!! The entire restaurant is very well put together, the vibes reflect a solid 1980 diners theme, the staff work very well together and the food quality is off the charts!! Next time when you are visiting Pasadena or curious to try out something worthwhile, take a ride to the tops, one bike and like a top, your mouth with be spinning with aroma and flavors above imagination!!

grabbed a quick breakfast , pretty busy but luckily they had kiosk to order with card.
Sadly our food was pretty cold, eggs, hashbrowns. The sausage was very cold. Took a bite in each and all were cold. We ordered two plates of the sausage,egg, & hashbrown. The only good part of the breakfast was the sourdough bread. Not sure if its this location that is lacking but it wasn't good. No one likes a cold breakfast. maybe we weren't lucky idk

I liked my pastrami sandwich a few months ago..this time not so much. I’m not sure if there is just an inconsistency with how much meat is put in or if this is the new standard but for $14 it’s a big no from me. I wish I caught how the sandwich looked but it was a to go order.

I would only order in person if I was to try again so I can make sure the sandwich is correct.

My husband and I came here for the first time, and honestly, we were pleasantly surprised. We could barely finish the huge portions. Everything was incredibly delicious! There are plenty of side options you can get for free, a great selection of drinks, and the menu itself offers a wide variety. The girl who served us was incredibly sweet. We paid $31 for everything, and I’d also like to point out that no one forced us to tip, so we gladly left one ourselves for such great service. The food was prepared very quickly, and the line was short. Parking was easy to find. We highly recommend this place and will definitely be back!

Service is hit and miss lately. Went for a pastrami omlette. They are awesome. Guy at order window is leaning there with his back to the car. Forgets my toast. Had asked for the grilled chilis at the ordering speaker. He must have forgotten. Says gonna take a minute. Like I didn't ask for it before getting there. Also gives no utensils. For an omlette. No jelly. I'm not sure about going there anymore just because of this one employee.

We've been coming to Tops for years. I'm a pastrami guy and Tops has the best Pastrami in the area. Yes, better than The Hat. Much better!

They're usually busy, which is good. The parking lot can fill up and I've had to park on the street many times. The person taking my order is hit and miss. Sometimes great! Sometimes not so good. Some of the people behind the counter have an attitude - definitely not good.

What else have we had at Tops? Their burgers are great! They make a tasty steak sandwich. I can't eat fries anymore, but when I could, they had a huge serving of good french fries. Onion rings are good too! Prepandemic, we would have a steak plate - came with a bowl of soup, fries, bread and a salad. Or the chicken plate - same as the steak plate, but with a chicken breast. Both are gone - they removed them sometime during the pandemic.

If you haven't tried Tops, you should. Their food is very good and there are some nostalgic pictures inside - they've been around when it was Route 66!

All the food options are amazing and very reasonably priced. The pastrami is good, and the corned-beef is a little better. The pastrami breakfast burrito is a must try. The sides are plentiful and many. The zucchini sticks, onion rings, and tater tots are my faves. It is rarely so busy that it is difficult to get seated ( indoor or outdoor), and the staff is very attentive and pleasant. Every time I have gone, the restaurant area and bathrooms were clean, and parking is easy. There is a medium-sized,open, and free parking lot and plentiful street parking also. The prices are very good and the food, service, and atmosphere is excellent. This is a must try. However, I warn you, you will be addicted.

I got t he BLAT. I have gotten this often in the past. It was not up to the standard I have had in the the past. It was always enough to share with someone. This time there were only 3 pieces of bacon, avocado was skimpy. I was very disappointed. It was a small sandwich compared to what I've gotten in the past.

I came here two years back but somehow totally forgot that I did. Researching for the best burger I can get east of LA I found on Reddit locals recommending original tops again. This time I got half pound hamburger with addition of pastrami. Price came out to around $12 but OMG so much meat! Totally recommend if you're a meat lover pastrami is really the play here. Definitely get the pastrami.

We moved to AZ in 2022 & every time we are back in the area stopping at Tops for a breakfast burrito is a must!!! My go to is a chili cheese breakfast burrito where I substitute tater tots for hash browns. Zucchini &/or chili cheese fries are awesomely delicious as well & I can’t go wrong with those either.

FYI - their salsa verde is soooo good.

As an avid chef and cook. Our first time visit.The burger's quality was not worth the price. Unfortunately, my partner had flies continuously bombarding her burger that she had only taken about 3 bites out of before the flies continued to attack her burger. She was disappointed and disgusted! How can you blame. Mind you, this happened while setting inside one of their booths. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE.

Lately it has been a hit and miss. I have been coming here for over 15 years. I get the times are tough but they have been very stingy with their amount of meat. My classic asada burrito came more salad than meat. It is ridiculous, I should of just ordered a salad. This is not the first time. It's been several times and I always think okay, maybe today will be different but I think I'm done. Also the girls that work there have no life in them. No smile, and are not welcoming. I have talked to the managers which are usually the ones wearing the burgundy shirt and they just blow it off. Service has gone down.

Update: 6/19: Went back for a burger. Good quality and portion size. Been here many times while living in E Pasadena. Moved away in 2018 and came back for the first time today. Quality of food always been consistent for me. Had the breakfast plate which is not hard to mess up. Potatoes perfectly seasoned. Only negative is the gal who rang me up at 7am…no greeting, no smile, sappy face, attitude. Never seen her before…ticket said “Manager,” on it. I hope not as she’s setting the standard there.

By far hands down One of the best Burger spots In The SGV ...Always Fresh !! Always satisfying! I love the Chile serrano the way they grill it! The Carrot slices! The Burger Is so big! Cooked to perfection! The chili cheese fries! Are so delicious!! I add raw onions sometimes ! I love this spot because its also easy to order online! Im always satisfied!!!

We've been custmers to Tops for the las 25 years, I love the people and service there but I have to complain about the portions they serve now, they'll give you half or less than what they used to, for instance the large fries are smaller than small size back in 2018, we don't mind paying top dollars if the portions are fair and as of now the owners are not giving people their money's worth.

The breakfast burrito was really solid. Not mind-blowing, but very good. Nice sausages served with a breakfast plate, too, not those little rinky-dink ones that a lot of places serve. Overall, really good breakfast experience.

This was the first time trying Tops. I have seen this location online, was in the area, and boom, it was lunchtime. The location is busy, so look at the menu online before you arrive. Me and my wife shared the three items, and ya, the food was fire 🔥 we will be back for sure 😎

Used to go to The Hat for my pastrami fix when in LA...but prefer the larger menu, indoor seating and clean restroom at Tops.

While visiting Pasadena, looking for a quality place to try out, my friend who ate there before highly recommended me to try it out. Taking a chance, I went and got recommended to tried out their Chili Cheese Fries, size: Small.

I was very impressed by the mouth watering aroma when the order was served, my first bite blew my mind away!! I love how the cheese blends very nicely with the spice-passionate chili on top of very finely made crispy fries, very tasty and fantastic! As a hobbyist food critic passionate about trying out the finest dishes at many restaurants and cafes, I’ve gain meaningful insight to make critiques on service quality, taste, presentation, and customer service. From the lovely treatment from staff to the best tasting chili cheese fries ever eaten, compared to 7 other fast food places, give this place a solid recommendation!!

The chefs and service staff are very well trained, collaborative, and approachable!! The entire restaurant is very well put together, the vibes reflect a solid 1980 diners theme, the staff work very well together and the food quality is off the charts!! I haven't been here since covid and I was quite surprised that the quality and the quantity has not changed at all. It's still very affordable for what you pay. I would definitely come back to this establishment more often. I ordered the tops original burger and zucchini fries and they were definitely on point with everything. The food is solid. The service is solid. Their menu has so many choices! You can get almost anything, but it's all solid. Nothing loosey goosey. I had their BLAT, bacon lettuce tomatoe avocado sandwich, and it was solid. It had creamy ripe avocados and thick crunchy bacon. And I also had their fried zucchini. Perfect! I also tasted their chili cheese fries, with thin julien fries, which was perfect with the chili, not too heavy like the thick cut fries. I need to go back to try their other good eats. Oh, I forgot to mention their pastrami... wow! It was so good. Maybe better than The Hat's! Go try!

Been coming here for years. Drive thru and dine in. Never ever had an issue, food is always great. The only thing I can complain about is when they cut the burger in half the paper is never cut all the way thru, by and I struggle to rip it without getting all messy with the juices.

One of our favorite lunch spots..for something fast and delicious! We usually order the chicken sandwich..& a pastrami burger! I love lettuce & they never disappoint with the amount they add it just gives a nice crunch to the burger.. They also have really good options for kids as well..my kids love the chicken strips & fish n chips! Plenty of parking and dine in seating as well..I would def recommend!

I’m very disappointed in the level of service I received on 2/2/2024. I placed an order online around 6:30pm for 5 items and paid with my wife’s card ($50 plus) I went into the establishment to pick up my order about 6:45p, after checking in I was told they were working on it. Around 8 customers came after me, placed their order, got their food as I waited. I checked and was told “ Oh, they forgot your fried items, but we are keeping the rest warm” long story short, I got my food at 7:15pm!! What’s the purpose of placing it online? I’ve gone through the drive through many times and had no issues.
I left a tip when I placed my order.

On top of everything the food was cold and I only live 3 1/2 minutes away!

It seems like everyone in Pasadena knows about this place. I have come here only one time before my visit yesterday, but it was like ten years ago, so I don't remember it well anymore. Except at The Hat, I've never had a burger made with pastrami.

I would say this place rivals In-N-Out. Of all burger places I ate at in the area, Tops is the closest.

Other reviews are correct. Tops serves huge portions. My burger was $12, though big enough to feed two.

I would come back for sure.
