Heard good things about this place and the reviews seemed mostly positive. My experience here was decidedly mixed, however. The good things were the service and atmosphere - our server was absolutely top-notch, very attentive and knowledgable about the menu. The space and atmosphere - 10/10. The food, however, was pretty meh. I ordered a house salad (entree size) with shrimp. The shrimp were good but the salad itself was mostly greens, with few of the other ingredients in the bowl (literally - two pieces of cherry tomato and three almond halves in my bowl). The foccacia was bland and too soft for my palate, it seemed more the consistency of cornbread.

I don't live in Dubuque but I do come here 1-2 times a year for travel. I love to shop and eat local, but I don't think I'll return here because the food was so lackluster.

Go-to date night spot. Tons of gluten free options (even desserts??) and gluten free croutons on the standard salad, so there's no confusion. Their artichoke spinach dip with gluten free bread is so insanely good, I get it every time. Beautiful cocktails, wine, and beer selections. Homey atmosphere that isn't too fancy, but fancy enough to feel special. A discount if you pay cash! This has been one of my favorite dinner spots for over a decade.

Most of the dishes were pretty good, especially the pork osso buco. The crème brûlée was served cold - you only need a $10 pastry torch to do it right. My biggest deductions are for the atmosphere (loud music = loud guests who have to talk over it) and the subpar bartender, who ignored me for about 10 minutes and waited on several customers who were there after me. I finally left the bar and took a table instead. The bartender seemed to wander aimlessly and did whatever task was right in front of her instead of prioritizing. She definitely needs remedial training!

FANTASTIC FOOD, SERVICE, & SMART! We reserved a table for 5 with 2 high chairs. We were greeted with a warm welcome and brought back to a semi-private room that was perfectly fit for our young family. The kids enjoyed the pizza, while the adults enjoyed the bruschetta, Caesar salad, Cajun pasta & pork. So delicious our 9-month old baby savored every bite! Thank you for making a meal with a 5, 2, and 9 month old so enjoyable! ⭐️

(Lifetime Food Service)...we loved our prior experiences at LMay so were excited to go back...Saturday night left us a little deflated. It was a later reservation as table can be loud; but seems like we got what was leftover...Entree Salad was bowl-full of frisee and not much else. (3 overcooked then grilled shrimp added for $10 --totally $22 for alot of greens, maybe 6 cherry tomatoes cut in half. They used up everything in side salads? (Table of 8)...Specials; not so much...seemed like they were trying to stretch what was available in back instead of kitchen telling service what other options there might be. Heard grumbles about how steaks were cooked; but osso buco (& pasta) was good. Sorry, but I'm done letting things slide. I hope you use this critique to glean information and learn from...we will try again. (Eventually)

We ate here for date night. I'm allergic to gluten, so I glanced at the menu beforehand and noticed they had a lot of options. We had the gf spinach & artichoke dip for an appetizer. It was amazing!! 10/10. Next up we got our house side salad. Again, amazing & 10/10. There was a ton of flavor and it was super fresh. I got the tri tip dinner and my husband (not gf) got the meatloaf. My tri tip was pretty good. The mashed potatoes had a little bit of a spiciness to them that I wasn't expecting. My husband said he wasn't super fond of the meatloaf. The sauce on top was way more ketchup based than we are use to. He the meatloaf itself could use more flavor. Our waitress was amazing and very knowledgeable about gluten free needs. Overall, we were pleased and will be back when visiting again! Definitely visit here if you are gluten free!

We appreciated the quiet intimate table in the front window. Really just lucked out with that. Food was excellent. My partner had the filet, sauce on the side w mashed potatoes and green beans. He said the steak was excellent, and was glad he ordered the sauce in the side, it was a little over powering for such a good piece of meat. I had crab cakes and a side house salad. Both were good. Handmade crab cakes. The red pepper sauce paired well. The house salad come with watermelon radish!! I’m a sucker for watermelon radish. I loved the garlic vinaigrette, partner not so much. We shared the bread, honeycomb, goat cheese, fig platter = excellent. That honey comb?!?! Lots of bread for two people. Our server was nice, attentive without being in our faces. The busers were young kids which took me back to my first job. Lighting and space were good. We enjoyed people watching from the front window.

L.May Eatery is everything you want in a high end restaurant. We were instantly greeted and sat in a beautiful part of the restaurant. The design of the restaurant was gorgeous and felt upscale but still modest. We ordered cocktails and appetizers. Of note, the honeycomb was beyond expectations and the lavender thyme martini had an amazing mouthfeel with great flavor. I ordered the special which had incredibly cooked shrimp and my partner ordered the seafood fettuccine which were both impeccable. The service and the owners were incredibly kind, generous, and quick to make up for any tiny mistake. L.May is undoubtedly the best place to eat in Dubuque.

We stopped here on our way home from a roadtrip. We picked it based on positive reviews. The server was very friendly. My house salad was very good. My nieces pizza was yummy. They do not have ranch dressing. That's almost un-American! Lol.
The big problem was with my main dish order of the Mediterranean pasta. I regretted adding chicken. It arrived & was unappealing based on a lot of dark meat with veins. I picked the dark veiny pieces out. There was no flavor or sauce. The olive oil had no flavor. I never have to add salt & pepper to a dish when I eat out. It was very expensive for what we ordered.
We will not be returning to this restaurant. It was the only bad meal on our trip.
I was disappointed the server didn't report our dissatisfaction to manager or owner. If she did no one stopped at our table to apologize or try to make it right. They did not take anything off the bill or anything.
I really only took a couple bites and then ate a slice of my nieces pizza for dinner.
Don't order the Mediterranean pasta! I was thinking they may have forgotten an ingredient since there was no garlic or any season flavor.

L May Eatery has swiftly climbed to the top of my list of favorite spots in Dubuque. Dining out, for me, transcends the realm of merely enjoying good food; it's equally about fostering delightful conversations. Fortunately, L May offers the best of both worlds.

Starting with the food, I opted for the filet mignon. Its taste and tenderness rival the ones I've had at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouses. A sincere recommendation from my end! However, the highlight of my evening was undoubtedly sitting at the bar. It felt less like being a customer and more like becoming a cherished member of the L May family. Our conversations meandered through various topics - from the intricacies of wine to the joys and tribulations of life, and, notably, to our shared passion for movies.

If you're on the lookout for a dining experience that promises not just exceptional food but also heartwarming conversations, L May should be your go-to. And, to the server with aspirations of gracing the silver screen, I'd like to say: one of my all-time favorite movies is "Stuck in Love." I have a feeling you might resonate with it.

Done in on a Friday night. I called ahead to make sure we could walk in because we were later than planned and it was about 6pm when we arrived. The hostess was friendly and efficient and showed us to a table quickly.

Our server Taylor was great. She had about 6 tables and handled everything well. We asked her if we should try the crab cakes or honey appetizer. She suggested the honey because there was 3 crab cakes. We got a laugh when there was 7 pieces of toast, an odd number, because the odd number of crab cakes was why she suggested the honey for 2. The toast was warm and it was a delicious combination. I added a little salt to cut the sweetness.

Next we ordered the small chicken elote pizza. Red sauce, chicken, corn, red onion, and a cream sauce drizzle sounded interesting. We enjoyed the pizza. I do think the option of a garlic sauce may have made the pizza even better. The thin crust was crisp. A fish of grated parmesan on the side was a move addition.

Tried the Lavender rosemary martini. It was sweet and delicious.

We really enjoyed our evening!

Thank you, Taylor for your great service. We hope to come back with friends in the future.

The focaccia bread was a little disappointing...very dry. Almost a cornbread like texture. The dinner portion was just right...the dessert portion was surprisingly large. I'm glad we split it. I was NOT impressed with L. May Eatery in Dubuque. First the crab cakes… or “croquette” (which they weren’t, not sure they even know what a croquette is) were so unbelievably bland I didn’t even eat the quarter sized one I had… Next was a choice of soup, house salad or Caesar salad. Caesar being my fav I order it. The “Caesar” salad is a spinach salad with no Caesar dressing— some kind of oil and herb dressing instead… typical salad veggies… and cheddar (not Parmesan crisps)… ok this wasn’t described on the menu or by the waitress… so idk what they believe a Caesar salad is…. But if there are no ingredients that are in a Caesar salad in the “Caesar” spinach salad you offer… it’s just a spinach salad. Pushed that to the side… and waited for my entree. $25 risotto— carmalized onions and mushroom risotto…. For $10 more you can add shrimp, I did. THREE SHRIMP! THREE! $35!! For a bowl of rice and THREE shrimp! Mind you we waited over an hour to get this— after watching multiple tables getting their entrees who were sat after us…. and honestly we were getting ready to walk out when our food finally came. I complained. I complained about the “Caesar” salad… because it’s not one. I complained that they were charging $3.34 for ONE PIECE OF SHRIMP. This is ridiculous! Even at the seafood counter at the store it’s not $3.34 a PIECE! The manager comped it— but a meal that was going to come out to over $100… which I am find with paying… should not be that overpriced!! Never again. Glad I ate a gas station chicken sandwich— for less than a piece of shrimp at L. May was— or else I would have starved through the concert. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have eaten here before and had good experiences however, my most recent to celebrate an anniversary has changed my outlook. We started with the steak bite appetizer which was essentially inedible pieces of gristle that we had to spit out. For our entrees, the salmon was dry and the risotto was like mush. My husbands filet mignon was tender but under seasoned. The focaccia was dry. The house salad was probably the best part as well as the drinks which were delicious. We tipped our waiter generously as she was friendly and attentive, however for the price of the food and lack of quality I doubt we will return.

Since it’s inception, L. May HAD been my favorite Dubuque restaurant. However, my last two visits have been nothing short of a sorry disappointment. The salmon cake appetizer was over cooked and drizzled with warm mayonnaise with a hint of lemon juice. The lasagna entree was in the form of a burrito stuffed with liquified cheese. The filling had a nasty texture that in no way resembles lasagna. No longer can I enjoy a glass of German Riesling. “Better” wines are only sold by the bottle, and by-the-glass wines are mostly big-box California wines. The wait staff was excellent and the salad and bread unchanged. That’s not enough for me to want to visit anytime soon.

Finally have the opportunity to visit almost six years later! They finally have meatloaf on the menu!! YAY LMAY!!! I order and, to my surprise, it was just OK. Kind of dry and falling apart with this weird siered crust on the outside. Even the mashed potatoes were dry. The only thing that wasn't dry was the accompanying vegetables. Food was amazing. I really liked the radish in the house salad instead of onion. The steaks were amazingly tender. Fast and friendly service.

The service was good and the waitress was very nice. The beer and dessert were good as well. However, I was pretty disappointed with the gluten-free pizza that I had as it was hard and burnt and I found a hair in it.

One of the best places to dine in the tri states! Excellent food, classic and original cocktails, and exceptional service. Even at its busiest, the dining room is cozy and welcoming. A gem of a place in downtown Dubuque, family owned and operated. Bring your appetite, desserts and appetizers are a must. Seasonal cocktails and entrees are well chosen.

L. May is D.Lightful! Following a tip from other reviews we made our reservation and were graciously welcomed at the door. Our server Kari was superb with a great command of the menu and bubbly cheerfulness in service. My pork shank was outstanding to the last bite. Orchard Pizza with apples!?!? Just eat it! You won't be sorry. Creamsicle Cheesecake was heavenly. Chocolate Mousse was dark, rich, and fudgy - not light - topped with Cinnamon ice cream and nuts. We did not mind the prices because L.May is X.Quisite!

We stopped in for drinks and dessert having her dinner elsewhere. We were welcomed to a table near the bar. I had two outstanding old fashioned made w rye and my wife had a refreshing cucumber lime concoction and a sangria, both delicious. We shared their take on a banana cream pie and it’s not often you say this but the crust was better than the pie, which was, in fact, delightful! Server was very sweet and very attentive even though she knew we were only getting drinks and dessert. It was fun watching the very professional bartender work. He apparently sold a lot of those excellent old fashioneds!

Had high hopes. Bruschetta appetizer was good and what I expected… soup was amazing and both tasted fresh. However, the main course ended up feeling like 4 day old rice: dry and lack of seasoning :( we mentioned it to our server but we got) “Yeah it’s a cake so I suppose it’s a more dry texture”. It was the vegetarian option and we added the shrimp, wishing we had just gone for the filet like everyone raves about. It did look great from what we could see coming out of the kitchen. Not sure if we would come back or not so
I’d give it 2.5 stars with a 50/50% of coming back.

Visited during a weekend trip to Dubuque. Owner chatted for a minute but server was very friendly. Food was great from the spinach dip appetizer, salmon and steak entrees and one of the many dessert options we had plenty of leftovers. Options to sit in or outside it was a place you could come for a casual dinner or date night.

Excellent food, excellent service, and excellent space! We thoroughly enjoyed every bit of our meals, from the orchard pizza as an appetizer to our main entrées, to our delectable Créme Brule. Our server answered all my questions about the seafood special and reccomended I get it even though I wasn't quite sure what it was and I am so glad she did. Absolutely delicious! We look forward to our next visit!

To put things in perspective, I have been recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. As others can say, finding a good place to eat can be quite challenging to say the least. Using an app (Find Me Gluten Free), L.May Eatery came up with positive reviews and I decided to give them a try for my son's birthday. Almost the entire menu has gluten free options available and the wait staff was VERY informative (as well as informed) about gluten intolerance as well as celiac disease. I was able to eat safely and enjoy a meal with my family on a special occasion which under other circumstances would have left me at home to eat while everyone else went out. This is a definite go to restaurant! It's a little on the pricier side, but the quality overmatches the price by far. Their pizza is amazing! When I asked the waitress about the crust, she said it was specially outsourced from Milwaukee and completely blew my mind at how delicious it was. (It 100% beats cauliflower crust any day of the week.)

5 stars just isn't enough for this establishment. Thank you for an amazing meal and an amazing night out with my family!

Our waitress went above and beyond with service. My husband and I specifically decided to dine at L. May Eatery for their Figgy Pizza. As soon as I looked at the menu and saw that it was not on the menu, I was half tempted to walk out the door. Our waitress immediately came over to our table with two cups of ice water and asked us how we were doing. I told her I was sad because their online menu said that they had Figgy Pizza, except it was missing from their actual menu. She apologized and reassured me that their alternative figgy pizza (with apples and whatnot) was also good. Nice save! We decided to give it a try. It was quite good, I must say. I had a Cranberry juice and then we tried the Dark Chocolate Pecan Mousse with dairy free coconut ice cream. Wow, that was the best dessert I'd had in a very very long time. Quite reasonably priced, too! Their desserts were $7-9. Our waitress showed us real life samples of each dessert they offered. We were overall extremely impressed with the service, food, and atmosphere. I'd go back there, for sure! Their blueberry crumble cheesecake looked scrumptious! What all around reasonable prices for such delicious food! 😄

In our stay we ate here twice. Loved it. Everything was wonderful and well thought out. Most restaurants that have gluten free options never have little breads, croutons, salad dressings, soups and desserts that are gluten free along with the main course.
Quality was loaded with good taste not fillers to qualify as gluten free. Just real food.
The shining star for me was wonderful desserts. We were shown a plate of desserts from which to choose. All but one was gluten free. Never have been a restaurant that offers gluten free desserts. It was difficult to just limit to one dessert per meal but we did. Both times desserts were full of flavor and excellent quality.

The food was so good I forgot to take pictures. Smoked salmon cheesecake was a good appetizer. I had the stuffed squash and the wife had crabby shrimp. Both plates were excellent. Definitely a must to eat even of you are an hour away. Also, if you can get the grilled shrimp on the side - YOU HAVE TO! It is life changing. Some good vegetarian options as well.

Walked in and was given a table despite not having a reservation. Was told we would only have an hour before we would be asked to leave. My wife and I accepted. The appetizers and pizza were great, and the drink selection featured some surprising depth. Great atmosphere and definitely a place worthy of a dress up date night. Will be returning again in the near future.

Only hiccup came in the wait time, which saw a near 30-45 minute wait for our food, but this was during a particularly busy night and again we did not have reservations yet were served regardless, so this point was easily overlooked for the food and courtesy.
