Family Friendly Cafe, Featuring Midwestern
Soul-Food & All-Day-Breakfast!
Came on Saturday for breakfast with my 2 girlfriends. The service was not great. Our server was beautiful but we felt so rushed and uncomfortable.
I got 2 sides: a cinnamon roll & sausage patty. My cinnamon roll was huge! It was only $6. It was super sweet. My sausage patties were hard as rocks and not enjoyable. The best part of our visit was probably the iced coffee.
We made the most of our experience but most likely will not be coming back.

Excellent diner with good atmosphere & fantastic food & service. It was very busy when we went on a Saturday around 11, however our party of five was seated almost immediately. I ordered a hot caramel latte & my daughter the same but iced. Both very good. Pictured is the warm cinnamon roll “side” option. It was big enough to feed our entire table, came with steam rolling off it & was so fresh and yummy! I would go back just for that. Also pictured is the Slammin Salmon omelette. I will definitely be back for that! Best omelette I’ve ever had & only place I’ve ever seen salmon as an omelette option. The boys had pancakes & they were enormous & yummy as well. Service was uber fast & friendly. There is also a Bluebird Cafe in Solon. Trying that next!

Some restaurants are so solid, so completely dependable, that they feel like a safe place for the itinerant diner.
Such a place is the Bluebird Cafe. Or perhaps more accurately the Bluebird Cafes. The Bluebird crew actually has three locations, the original Bluebird Diner and two newer locations, a Cafe in Solon, Iowa, and another in North Liberty, Iowa.
All three locations excel, but the original is a review for another day.
I have been to both Cafe locations multiple times and have yet to be even slightly disappointed.
Breakfast or lunch the menu is full of dishes for everyone. From the completely familiar to something interesting and new.
My last breakfast was of the familiar variety, an omelet of my choosing consisting of their excellent house made sausage, red pepper, and American cheese. The omelet itself was light, fluffy, and of the half-fold variety. It was absolutely delicious.
The breakfast prior to that was not common diner fare. Their Huevos Azul is a unique and tasty dish composed of a finely textured house made red pepper chili over Parmesan polenta with over easy eggs. One can add meat (chorizo, bacon, ham, or turkey) for $1, but why? This dish is really well balanced. The chili and polenta are perfect counterpoints to one another, and the eggs mix in to create a scrumptious and harmonious plate.
The thoughtful touches to the menu continue with an oh-so-savory hash with an unusual base of potatoes, carrots, turnips, and parsnips.
One can order a Benedict with crab cakes, spinach & tomato, salmon, and, of course, double smoked ham.
I'll wrap the breakfast descriptions with this incredibly delectable item, the Krakatoa Omelet. Pecan smoked bacon (oh, my), jalapeño, red onion, garlic, citrus cream cheese, and pepperjack. The richness and flavor of this dish almost defies my ability to describe it. Almost. The omelet is light and perfect. The pecan smoked bacon packs a favor profile that one can't help but notice. And that citrus cream cheese filling… so creamy and somehow almost delicate in its flavor, it is truly special.
Enough of breakfast, how about the midday menu? Again, it is complete with plates to satisfy all palates.
A cheeseburger? Sure, available with Cheddar, American, pepperjack, bleu, Swiss, Prairie Breeze (a slightly sweet cheddar that could have its own review), mozzarella, provolone, or feta.
How about a seared Yellowfin Tuna salad with a Sesame Wasabi Vinegarette with a complex flavor profile that makes one want to taste a bit of the dressing by itself
The andwich list reads like a who's who of luncheon favorites but again with the thoughtful touches.
The Cuban has Iowa smoked ham, pulled pork and two condiments that raise it above the average, a spicy relish and a mustard sauce that individually are excellent, but combined create an uncommon flavor to this common sammie.
This theme of a little extra gets carried through to the reuben, pulled pork, BLT, tenderloin, grilled chicken, club, and French dip line up (not a complete list). I'll wrap up this love song to lunch with just one more, the Big Person Grilled Cheese. I have eaten an unimaginable amount of grilled cheese sandwiches in my life, a favorite since I can remember eating, and something I, myself, make quite well. This one is next level, with provolone and Prairie Breeze on sourdough, grilled to perfection, and in all honesty, perhaps the best I have ever had.
The service in both locations is consistently excellent, not simply quick and efficient, but friendly in that professional way that many service cadres struggle to reach. We have all experienced friendly service that was perhaps a touch too friendly, or crisp service that was a bit too crisp, but the Bluebird crew strike a balance that makes the diner feel comfortable, welcome, and well taken care of.
The buildings themselves are well maintained, comfortably appointed, and squeaky clean.
I have dined in hundreds, if not thousands, of restaurants in my 40-year plus career, the Bluebird Cafes feel like home.

I’ve been here a couple of times. Good food, good service, fair price. I wouldn’t wait around to get a table, but am happy to stop by for a late breakfast. They are good with substituting other sides for eggs since I can’t eat them - other places put up such a stink.

Really wanted to love this local cafe. Although small with limited seating it is a convenient location and one of the few places around that “specializes” in breakfast / brunch.
Our food was visibly appealing but that’s where the positives ended. Biscuits and gravy were bland, pancakes chewy, and hash browns were just so-so. My breakfast loving kids ate very little and left hungry.
Service was ok but you could tell they were rushing and not thrilled about the cramped space.

Ok breakfast joint, but waiting nearly an hour for an estimated 30 min wait time for a table was maddening not to mention watching numerous others that came in after us get seated before us. Trying to eat while others are huddled around your table waiting in their table made atmosphere less amiable. No magic in the menu or offerings. Would be nice to see some combos instead of having to alacarte a pancake and egg and meat/fruit order. Service was average and rushed. Overall, it was fine but not something I’d rush out to experience again anytime soon.

I have eaten breakfast here several times before and it was fine, but the lunch I had was terrible. It was the Arnold club sandwich and while it is fine to put one’s own spin on a sandwich, it has to somewhat resemble the original. It was pretty much inedible. I also find the restaurant dirty which makes me wonder what the kitchen is like. I do not recommend this restaurant.

I like good coffee and ordered a 5lb bag based on the reviews. My expectations were average but after the first sip, I was sold. A cafe/diner must get coffee right, and this brew nails it. It's not a dark roast that is overpowering with a burnt taste. While the beans are dark, the coffee has a mild medium-dark profile, is very smooth, and not bitter. I will certainly be ordering more.
Nice job Bluebird!

3 star because their coffee is Horrible. The worst coffee I’ve ever had. Ordered latte, it tastes like milk soaked with some beans. I believe they are using same grind size for everything, pour over, espresso, etc. $5 for latte is not cheap. I don’t expect it to be amazing but at least show some respect. Grind them finer and extract them properly.

2nd try, both not so good. 1st time ordered a tenderloin sandwich. Received a very small cold pork chop on a bun. Ordered fries as a side had to ask for them 3 times, got them after everything else was gone. 2nd time ordered an omelet. They thought they may have mixed up mine with my wife's. So we basically had to tear them up to see. They did mix them up. She ate a jalapeño, she is very sensitive to spicy food and it wasn't good. We switched omelets. But it wasn't even my omelet. There was meat in the veggie only omelet I ordered. Nice atmosphere but they don't seem to have a good handle on getting an order right. 15$ for someone else's omelet seems like too much.

A small cafe. Booths and a sitdown bar. A hostess sat us at a booth. Waitress came right away and got us our drinks. Coffee was made fresh. Alcohol is available, for those so inclined. Not a large menu. Breakfast is served all day. I ordered the crab cake appetizer. Loved it! Made with real crab. The best crab cakes I have ever eaten. The presentation was also excellent. I also ordered "The Ah-nold Club". Again, fantastic! One of the best sandwiches ever. My date ordered the hamburger. Also very good. The sandwiches came with fries. I wuld very much like to try more of their food. For excellent food this is the place to come. Bring your date. The only thing negative is the restroom needed a thorough cleaning.
Otherwise, Recommend!

This was a complete disappointment because I drove here from the airport to try this place after reading the reviews. I am not from this area but if this food is considered good then it’s unfortunate. It seemed promising because the place was packed and I was excited to try it. The indoor seating was completely full but they offered a place outside on a small patio area. I really think a disclaimer should’ve been given considering the patio area was directly in the sunlight. Now, there was a small over head awning but it was pointless because the sun was shining directly on everyone offering no reprieve from hell. I had small children and I should’ve known better as soon as I saw it and waited the 10-20 minutes for indoor seating. Needless to say, I wasn’t the only table suffering, all the others were too. Advice: put some outdoor blinds on your awning to make the outdoor area somewhat habitable. After about 50 mins to an hour our food finally arrived. By then, I had overheated, grouchy, miserable children and a teen with electronics that were shutdown due to the high temperature caused by direct sunlight (around 9:30 am). This would usually be a great thing to get all my kids off their electronics but none of them could carry on a conversation or play a game due to being miserable from the heat. The drinks were fast, our waitress was sweet and meant well but the food was not good at all. The Krakatoa hash browns sounded amazing and honestly it seemed like they tried but while it had a nice spicy kick, it lacked seasoning. The corned beef hash was absolutely undercooked. The potatoes were crunchy because they were raw. The warm cinnamon roll was huge but dry, and the small slathering of cream cheese frosting in between the layers tried to make up for it but fell short. My teenage daughter had a dish called the eggs Hemingway which came with smoked salmon and poached eggs. After the raw potatoes she didn’t trust the salmon and decided to remove it but her eggs were fine. Additionally her dish came with a pancake. I decided to give that a try but when I cut into it, I noticed there some sort of green leafy vegetable/herb stuck to the bottom. This was a complete turnoff. One of my little ones ordered applesauce (which is homemade) and my other one ordered the fruit cup. Both of those items were good and there were no complaints.
Unfortunately we were so hot and disappointed with the food that we hurried to pay the bill and leave. My older child took the kids out to get in the air conditioned vehicle and even though I hesitated, I still tipped the waitress at least 10% for effort and it’s not her fault the kitchen fails to cook dishes properly. I also noticed the raw potato corned beef dish was still on my check and request it be removed which they did (to clarify, my waitress DID ask if I wanted the kitchen to remake that particular dish and I politely declined). When I arrived at my car I realized they never gave my credit card back to me so I went back in to get it. One of the other servers was standing at the cash register and I noticed my card had been left in the card machine slot. I asked her nicely if I could get my card back and she paid no attention. At this point I just wanted to get far away from this place as soon as possible so I had to loudly demand if I could take my card back from the slot myself. Now, that definitely caught the attention of other servers who were quick to oblige.

The Poo-bird strikes again! Not sure why everyone raves about this place? I live down the street and I’ve been several times over the years and not once have I had a good meal. 9-10 times the greasy food gives me an upset stomach and my buddy and I have joke for years about how we think they put visine in the eggs but the more I go the more I believe it may be true. Another staple to breakfast in my opinion is hash browns which I would call hash white’s because even though I order them well done/crispy they come out barely cooked and are clearly low quality frozen has brown from a bag. Hard to believe a place can stay in business when they can’t figure out how to properly cook eggs and hash brown. Not sure if my standards are to high or everyone else’s are non existent but the place is always busy so who knows???

Every city and town deserves one of these! Service so good it feels like family. Food that features local, high quality ingredients. Atmosphere is welcoming and uses touches of pleasant, sustainable design. Patio is spacious and relaxing. Accessibility is good, dining is all on one level.
A note on the service: team service uses every teammate to seat tables, refill drinks, and run food. “Your” server might not do all of these things, but I assure it is because everyone is attentive, not that “your” waiter is ignoring you. I did this for twenty years, watching a good service team in action is like listening to a top notch orchestra.

First bad experience was with the crab eggs benedict. It had one tiny little piece of crab. Next visit, we tried the cappuccino after the coffee wasn't that great on the prior trip. It was a step down from gas station cap. Finally, our last visit we tried what is supposed to be a specialty--cinnamon roll. Dry, not yeasty, not cinnamany, basically not tasty.

We went on Sunday at 1pm and we had to wait for 30 minutes before getting a table. The people are friendly, though.
By the way, they charge you the 3% processing fees if you pay with your credit card.

Food was greasy! Waitress was rude. Most of the people working here are kids. Not a
real clean restaurant.

Not the greatest, if you want to get fat you eat their food, didn’t like the multicolored cheese cake and the young waitress tried to charge me for it which I only tried one bit of it, when I told her about she shouldn’t charge when a customer didn’t like the food she toke it off and throw the check on the table like she didn’t care, I would never come back to this restaurant!!

Told the server I liked my omelette dry on the inside but what I got instead was a dark brown omelet on the outside and runny on the inside.
I should have sent it back I'm sure they would have fixed it but I just didn't have time.

Portion sizes are small for the price. Especially with prices being as high as other brunch places that serve bigger portions, like First Watch.
I have ordered take out, thought maybe that's why the portion size was small. So I dined in and it was just as small but now they charge service fees. Food tastes fine tho.

This is a tough review as I my ratings were between 3-4 star overall. A year or two ago, I would be torn between 4-5 star. Scheduled a business meeting there for breakfast. Coffee is always spot on! Ordered blue bird eggs special. Order came out quickly, but the eggs, and sausage and toast were cold so that was little disappointing. Coffee was empty for both of is for sometime during the meal and never came back around to include table next to us. Our waitress was curious and polite as we paid our bill. I will come back with hopes of maybe it was just an unfortunate experience, and next time will be on point. Little more quality control and more customer service contact would have met previous expectations and quality. Will try again soon!

Perfectly adequate diner service; we were seated immediately, despite being near full capacity—which is to be expected for a Sunday brunch service. Portions were generous but not oversized, and the Ahhh-nold club sandwich was excellent.

Stopped by on my trip from Texas, had Jayna as our waitress!! She was wonderful and the food was great. Definitely top 10 casual breakfast/brunch spots I’ve been to.

Overall, it was a good experience. Had to keep reminding the waitress to bring stuff we asked for. The place was packed, but it didn't take long for us to get our food. Nice seeing a local business where the owners work as hard as the staff.

I eat here often because I love their iced tea and corned beef hash and eggs. The portion sizes are good, the employees are friendly and the place is clean.
