A community printing shop in Detroit that focuses on equitable and sustainable practices in design.
I’m so grateful for Small Works. I originally tried the riso open studio in hopes of using their cutting equipment for my own bookbinding. I’ve learned so much from Gerald & Chen since then. The overall vibe is that of support and encouragement in your practice. Recently the shop has started offering bookbinding classes, which I highly recommend. Definitely try the riso and/or letterpress classes too. Open studio times are so valuable as well!

Did a letter press workshop here. Had a great time. Very knowledgeable and at a great price to learn something with so much history. Highly recommend taking one of their classes or workshops in Detroit.

Small Works is such a valuable resource for the print and bookmaking community in Detroit. Gerald & Chen are so knowledgeable about their craft. Their enthusiasm and encouragement is a great support for learners at any level. I took a beginner risograph class and through the open studio times continue to get support bringing my own print projects to life.

Small Works is an amazing educational community for Book Arts and printing. Letterpress, risograph, and bookbinding classes are taught in small cohorts, with an eye toward doing independent work during studio hours. Gerald and Chen are professionals whose knowledge runs deep, and they sincerely want to pass on knowledge to people at all levels of ability. There is no better place to get started if you are interested in Book Arts.
Small Works also does amazing letterpress and risograph print work, if you want distinctive high quality printing.

A great resource for anyone looking to learn about bookbinding, and book-related arts. Even as an experienced bookbinder I've found this to be great for access to tools I don't have in my home studio.

It is a real joy to work with Gerald & Chen. Not only is the final printed product high quality, with great craftsmanship and attention to detail, but they are nurturing a wonderful community of artists, designers and folks interested in the process of traditional print. They are so open to share resources and information and are wonderful people to communicate with. Highly suggest their services for any printed materials.

There is no shortage of seemingly superlative adjectives (generous, thoughtful, wise, _____) to describe what this space already is and hopes to become. Gerald and Chen are continuing a tireless and vital tradition of stirring it/ink up, keeping the doors open, the lights on, and letting people in. They were recommended to me by none other than Amos Paul Kennedy Junior (also known as Kennedy Prints) and there are few places or collaborators that I dream of translating and printing into reality as much as them and there.

Small Works hosted Civilla for a day of printing our very first 'zine. The team was amazing to work with -- generous with their time, equipment, energy, and spirit. The resulting publication was beautiful in every way.
We couldn't recommend Small Works more highly!
