The barrel is a fun spot with delicious food & drinks! A must stop!
We went on our family vacation on the week of July 19, 2024. All my in laws from Florida and Montana were really interested in going here so we checked it out on July 24 about 6:00pm after dinner. It was really neat to see this big root beer barrel by the street. When you order, you can see the inside of the barrel where they make your drink/food. My husband got their regular root beer and he said it was pretty good. My toddler got a mini ice cream sundae and it was pretty big for a mini size! I had to split it up and gave the other half to my two year-old son.
It was such a beautiful day and great atmosphere. You can sit outside on a bench and enjoy your food/drink. We went there on a weekday so it was not too busy. I did see a long line on the weekends and the parking lots were full. If you want to experience their root beer or root beer float, get there a little early on the weekends.
I would recommend trying out this place to everyone. It was a great experience for my family; and the weather was perfect for it. Their prices were pretty reasonable. They have pretty simple menu options. My family and I would definitely go there again if we were around the area.

Had a friend recommend we stop here while in the area, great spot for some good dogs! We loved that they use 100% angus beef dogs ❤️ They have such great flavor! We had to stand in a decently long line but it moved pretty fast. They have lots of seating available. I was suprised they were so busy with it being a beautiful summer day and the beach being so close!

A taste of yesteryear. REALLY good root beer. Throwback to a simpler time with a basic menu and really good comfort food. The staff working there was first class. The food was great, the atmosphere good, the "vibe" just what the doctor ordered after a long day on the road. I had just a regular hot dog with some potato salad and a root beer. Perfect quick and easy evening meal. If you find yourself in the area by all means check this one out. You will be happy you did.

We USED to love going here. We are so disappointed. It is clear they are under new ownership. They used to have the best chili cheese dog on the planet with melted cheese, high quality ingredients and chili with beans in it, evenly cut toppings. Now, it’s all thrown together, the cheese is low quality and not melted. The chili is low quality and tastes like it comes out of a can. We used to come here every day when we were in town and now we won’t be back. Such a massive disappointment. The staff told us there is a new owner. Why would you take something and make it worse? I’ll add two photos. One of the new hot dog with the shredded cheese and pickle (it looks like crap) and a photo of the old hotdog with the onions. Smaller menu, different vibe. Terrible experience.

Came here with my fiance and her friend about two weeks ago. I wanted to surprise my fiance so when we got close I told her to close her eyes, and then when we arrived I told her to open them so she could see the giant barrel 😁
It's a pretty big barrel too, and it's a cool sight to see! The service was good and for how many people there were I'd say they were pretty quick. My fiance and I both got the Coney dog with bacon and a souvenir mug of root beer. Both were delicious! The root beer had the satisfying crisp that you get from good root beer, and that coney dog might be the best one I've had, it was good! Her friend got potato salad with her hot dog and she let us try it, and that was really good too! The three of us enjoyed it and I'm glad my fiance and I got to take a bit of it home with the souvenir mugs 😊

This is such a cute place. Ice cream floats are a little overpriced for what you get, but it's a novelty. There are no vegetarian choices if your thinking of having a quick lunch. Would be nice if they at least offered prepackaged salads.

Stood in line for 20 mini and there was no hope that we would be served in time to make it to our sand dune tour. They had one person working. Definitely understaffed for lunch time on the first weekend in October( Saturday with nice weather. There were at least 30 in line, drove by at 3 and the line was equally as long. Maybe next trip

Just overall sloppy.

The portions are generous (get the napkins ready for some good messy eating, which is exactly what you want from a place like this) and the atmosphere is chill.
One thing I liked was how the staff wasn't shy about shouting out names when an order was ready. Maybe it was just the people that happened to be there that day, but if the folks behind the counter shout to the heavens, you know it's a good place, in my opinion 🤓

Had high expectations due to the reviews, but was so disappointed. Service was extremely slow and the workers were unhappy and completely checked out. Half of our groups orders were messed up. Mac and cheese was half cold and had burnt bits. It's definitely a cute spot to stop and we liked the atmosphere, but the benches were dirty with old food and not very sturdy. Maybe just an off day, but not someplace I'd return.

Sad, sad, sad. Bought two large rootbeer floats and they were almost completely melted when handed to my wife and I. . Went out of our way to try this unique place and get a refreshing rootbeer float. Granted it was the 4th of July weekend (Saturday) and a little busy, but something that should be accounted for for a food service venue.

We have been going here for years and used to love it! We were just there and found out they reduced their hot dog choices by at least 50%.They used to offer unique gourmet hot dogs with unusual options like cream cheese, bacon, tomatoes, etc. That's why we always went there! Now they just offer a few choices like sauerkraut and chili. We could get those choices anywhere so we decided to walk away. We heard there are new owners this year. Respectfully...Who buys a successful eatery and eliminates 1/2 the menu? Hopefully, if enough people express their disappointment, they will bring back the previous delicious choices. Until then, you have lost our business which I'm sure is a drop in the bucket. I just wanted to express our disappointment. This is one Douglas tradition that is over for us. What a shame. Still... we wish you the best of luck in your new business venture. Cheers!

It was really busy. We stopped by while we were out, figured it was one of the only places open on the fourth. Honestly it was underwhelming. We spent almost 50 for four hotdogs, two floats, and a sundae. Took 15-20 minutes to get all of our order, we had to wait forever on the mac and cheese and the sundae. Which they ran out of whipped cream for and didn't put sprinkles on. So it was just ice cream with some chocolate drizzled on. They didn't give us straws or forks when our food came out and when we asked for some they seemed like they were being stingy with their cutlery and straws. Couldn't hardly get a seat to eat our food either.

Came back for a repeat this year (2024) only to find out that there is new ownership and no more strawberry shortcake. The rootbeer floats are ok but I can easily pour rootbeer over vanilla ice cream at home. The menu listed online is no longer accurate. I know it is a rootbeer barrel but the sweets menu is lacking.
There used to be nice wooden seats/benches along the concrete patio. Those have been removed. There are lots of worn out picnic tables now. Miss the way it used to be!

I feel dumb rating pretty much anything, and honestly my expectations were really low considering that when I got there there was a blockage in between me and the person working so thick that I was trying to give my order and I couldn't even tell if they were there or not.
As somebody who cooked for a long time I can honestly say the flavor was outstanding.
Everything was not just properly seasoned, but obviously fresh and well thought out. The Mac was awesome, the chicken sandwich was really good. Flavors were properly layered, portions made sense.

Originally built to give beach goers one last treat before they left the sandy shores of Lake Michigan.
The root beer barrel was restored and rebuilt to offer the same thirst quenching root beer and tasty yet affordable hot dogs to tourists and locals alike.
The building is hard to miss as it is a giant root beer barrel erected right on the way to Douglas beach park. It offers crisp cold root beer from the tap, creatively crafted hot dogs and an array of affordable desserts.
The vibes are nice. They have a bunch of picnic style seating and a lot of open area for kids to run around so you can eat and enjoy care free. (This assumes you have kids and constantly have to worry about being judged when you go to eat.)
The mac and cheese was also a surprise highlight as was covered in real gooey cheese then baked off to crispy perfection.
So if you’re looking for a casual spot to enjoy an affordable meal in a memorable setting get to the Douglas Root Beer Barrel.

The food was actually great, but it takes forever! We would have left had we known. If the line is almost out to the road, it will be about an hour to an hour and a half. The line seems like it would move fast, but it doesn't. Very inefficiently run on the inside, so it takes a long time. I wouldn't recommend going with little kids because the wait will probably always be long unless there's only 5 or so people in line. Bring folding chairs if you decide to take on the line because you won't have to hardly move them, but you'll be spending a long time sitting in them. They also only take cash... what!? Who takes cash only these days. Just raise your prices 5% to cover the credit car fees.
